Speaker Biographies

ANDREW WOSKETT

Andrew Woskett has 30 years experience in resources development and management. After several years in heavy construction, he entered the mining industry in 1981 through CRA's (now RioTinto) engineering group. He has managed projects in copper, gold, nickel, iron ore, silica, coal and coal-to-liquids variously through feasibility, project execution and operations.  For two years he was CEO of a technology business and for over 15 years has been managing director of mineral resource development companies listed either on ASX or AIM. In early 2010 he became managing director of ASX listed Minotaur Exploration (ASX: MEP) with an extensive portfolio of projects in copper, gold, base metals, magnetite and industrial minerals. Andrew has a Bachelor Degree in Engineering and holds a Master of Commercial Law. He is a Fellow of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy.

LEE CHEN

Mr. Chen is Registered Professional Engineer of Ontario, Canada with mechanical engineering background. He has been working in Hydrocarbons industry for 18 years, including for HQCEC, Kvaerner and WorleyParsons Canada and China. As lead engineer, engineering manager, project manager and corporate management roles, he has participated into different phases of multiple domestic and international hydrocarbons mega projects. 
With solid engineering knowledge, Mr. Chen is familiar with China and international engineering and project execution practice and procedures, has extensive experience in current international engineering design system and different project stakeholders’ integration of mega projects especially for Chinese overseas investment projects, which cover areas of Refinery, Oil & Gas onshore and offshore, and Petrochemicals.

OUYANG CHENG

Mr. Ouyang Cheng is Second Secretary for economic & commercial affairs of the Chinese Embassy in Australia. From 2003 to 2010, he was working in the Department of International Trade and Economic Cooperation of the Ministry of Commerce of China, acting as Executive Officer and Deputy Director responsible for China’s FTA policy making and negotiations. From 2000 to 2003, he was studying in China’s Zhongnan University of Economics and Law and obtained his Jurist Master Degree and Lawyer’s Certificate. From 1996 to 2000, he was working in Hunan Lishui Hydro & Power Cooperation, China. From 1992 to 1996, he was studying in Hunan Normal University and obtained his bachelor degree on English literature.

WARWICK SMITH

Mr. Smith is the Chairman of the Australian New Zealand Banking Group (ANZ Ltd) for NSW & ACT.  In addition, he is Chairman of the Advisory Board of Australian Capital Equity Group of Companies (ACE) holders of interests in the Seven Network, Western Australian News Ltd, Coates Hire Ltd, Westrac Pty Ltd, Caterpillar Industrial services and equipment in Western Australia, New South Wales and North East China.                                          
Previously, he was an Executive Director with Macquarie Bank and chaired the Telecommunications, Media, Entertainment and Technology (TMET) Group within Investment Banking and was Global Communications Director for the Bank. Mr. Smith was a Federal Government Minister in a Parliamentary career spanning 15 years where he served as Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for the 2000 Olympics, Minister for Sport, Local Government and Territories, Family Services, Communications, Privatisation, Aboriginal Affairs and Science and Energy. He has a strong focus on international affairs. Mr. Smith is the Inaugural Australian Business Member for the BOAO Forum for Asia and a Member of Japan-Australia Roundtable.  An immediate former Chairman of The Global Foundation and former Deputy Chair of the Asia Society AustralAsia Centre and member of the International Council of Asia Society, and Director of the Australia Korea Business Council.  He is a past National President of the Australia China Business Council.  Currently he is on the National Executive of the Australia-Taiwan Business Council. He also is a founding and continuing member of the Australian American Leadership Dialogue.  He was Australia’s First Telecommunications Ombudsman and has received the Centenary Medal for contribution to philanthropic and community programmes and an Order of Australia for his contribution to the Parliament of Australia, philanthropy, international trade, tourism and the telecommunications industry.

SIMON MITCHELL

Simon Mitchell is a Geologist and Finance Executive with over 20 years’ experience in the resources industry, including 10 years in the field as an exploration and development geologist and 10 years as a finance executive in both corporate and banking environments.
As a geologist Mr Mitchell worked for Normandy NFM, RGC Exploration and Aurora Gold in places as diverse as Indonesia and Bolivia. Mr Mitchell also spent 6 years with the Commonwealth Bank in project and structured finance.
Mr Mitchell has been heading Toro Energy’s Business Development activities since late 2006 and has been largely responsible for Toro’s corporate growth, including the structuring of the Napperby Option, executing the takeover of Nova Energy and the negotiation of the Dawson – Hinkler Well Project acquisition.

DR NICK MOFFATT

Nick joined KPMG’s Sustainability Climate Change and Water Division in 2009 to provide industrially-based subject matter experience to assist clients with the technical analysis of environmental policy and the development of strategies to manage business risks associated with climate change and the introduction of carbon costs.
Nick obtained his Chemical Engineering qualifications in the UK and prior to joining KPMG, worked in the UK and Australian chemical and fertiliser manufacturing sector in a variety of roles including process engineering, project development, commissioning, production management and business development. Nick has spent a significant  proportion of his career in senior management roles where he has been responsible for the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of large chemcial manufacturing facilities. Since joining KPMG, Nick has worked with a broad range of clients including Wesfarmers Limited, Woodside Energy Limited, Orica Limited, Burrup Fertilisers Pty Ltd, St John of God Health Care, Citic Pacific Mining, Woolworths Limited, Fortescue Metals Group and the Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency.

DR ALLAN TRENCH

Dr Allan Trench is a geologist/geophysicist and business management consultant with over 20 years experience within the Australian resources sector across a number of commodity groups including gold, copper, nickel, oil & gas and LNG. Allan is an Associate Consultant to independent metals and mining advisory CRU Group, an independent director of a number of emerging resources companies in Australia and overseas - and the author of seven books on the mining sector including his latest 2011 book “Mining Boom” published by Major Street Press.

DR PAUL HEITHERSAY

Dr Paul Heithersay was appointed to the position of Chief Executive of the Olympic Dam Task Force in December 2010. He also holds the position of Group Executive Director, Minerals and Energy Resources. 
Paul Heithersay’s role as Chief Executive of the Olympic Dam Task Force is to oversee the Government’s interaction with the Olympic Dam Expansion.  
As Group Executive Director, Paul Heithersay leads the PIRSA division of Minerals and Energy Resources.   
Prior to joining the Public Service in South Australia in 2002, Paul Heithersay spent over 20 years in the mining industry in Australia and Southeast Asia for North Limited and its predecessor Geopeko. 

GAVIN THOMAS

Gavin Thomas has had a successful career discovering ore bodies and developing mining companies from the exploration phase into mid-tier gold or copper producers. He has 40 years of international experience in exploring for, evaluating, developing, operating and reclaiming mines in North and South America, Australia, the Southwest Pacific, Asia and Europe.
Previously he was Managing Director and CEO of Equatorial Mining Ltd. from 1998 to 2004 with the El Tesoro Copper Mine in Chile. Prior to that, he was an Executive Director of Niugini Mining Ltd. from 1985 where he led an aggressive world-wide exploration team that had offices in South America, India, Europe, Malaysia and Thailand.
He is probably best known for being credited with discovering the world’s largest gold mine outside of South Africa at Lihir Island, becoming a founding Director of Lihir Gold Ltd. Gavin has a degree in Geology from Macquarie University in Sydney, is a Chartered Professional of the AusIMM and a member of its Geoscience Taskforce.

GREG ENGLISH

Greg joined Norman Waterhouse in early January 2009 as Partner and Team Leader of the firm's corporate and commercial practice.  
In addition to being a lawyer he is a qualified mining engineer with ten years practical experience working on many different resources projects and operations throughout Australasia and Canada. 
As a lawyer with mining and business development experience, Greg is aware of many commercial and technical issues that other lawyers generally may not appreciate.  This mixture of technical expertise and commercial acumen has enabled Greg to communicate effectively with clients, engineers, project managers and commercial managers.

IAN FINCH

Ian’s career in the mining and exploration industry spans over 35 years, commencing with his extensive work throughout Southern Africa between 1970 and 1981. In 1981 he joined CRA Exploration as a Principal Geologist and was instrumental in the discovery and development of several new gold and copper/gold resources in Australia. In 1993 Ian established Taipan Resources Limited, a company which pioneered exploration for large gold deposits in the Ashburton district of Western Australia. In 1999 Ian founded Templar Resources Limited, which is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Canadian listed Goldminco Corporation.
In 2006, Ian established Trafford Resources Limited to explore for iron oxide, copper, lead-zinc, silver, gold and uranium deposits at the Wilcherry Hill project located within South Australia's Gawler Craton. In 2007 Trafford established a 50% owned subsidiary, IronClad Mining Limited, to explore, develop, mine and market the Wilcherry Hill iron ore project. Ian is currently Managing Director of Trafford and Executive Chairman of IronClad.
Ian has a BSc (Hons) in Geology from the University of Birmingham (England) and is a Member of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy.

JASON BECKTON

Residing Santiago Chile, Mr Beckton is a professional geologist with over 19 years experience in exploration, project development, production and management in Australia and internationally.
Mr Beckton commenced his career with Pancontinental and Goldfields Ltd throughout Australia from the early 1990s before moving to a senior role with Gympie Gold in 2001. Subsequently Mr Beckton was Project Manager for the Palmarejo silver gold project in Mexico and managed the program that grew the resource base from zero to 3.1 million ounces gold equivalent during 2004. More recently Mr Beckton was Manager - Chile for Exeter Resource Corporation, and led the team in 2007 that was responsible for the commercial discovery at the Caspiche Porphyry prospect in the Maricunga Gold Copper Belt of Chile. Ongoing drilling has resulted in an inferred estimate by Exeter of 41.7 million gold equivalent ounces.
Mr Beckton holds a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Geology from Melbourne University, and a Masters in Economic Geology from the ARC Centre of Excellence in Ore Deposits at the University of Tasmania. He is a member of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, Australian Institute of Company Directors, Society of Economic Geologists and Australian Institute of Geoscientists, a Competent Person for resource estimates for ASX-JORC codes and Qualified Person under Canadian Securities Administrators National Instrument 43-101.
Mr Beckton is also on the advisory board of the Economic Geology Research Unit (EGRU), James Cook University (www.jcu.edu.au/egru/) and on the advisory board of EPG Partners, a Chilean Private Equity Fund participating in the $60 million dollar Chilean Government initiative ‘Fenix’ promoting domestic investment into the Chilean mining sector.

JIM WHITE

Mr. Jim White B.App Sci(Met), FIEAust, CP Eng, has been the Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Centrex Metals Limited since August, 2010. He is a metallurgist who has spent his career with BHP and OneSteel, with a focus on steelmaking, exploration and project development. He was involved in OneSteel’s Strategic Revitalisation Program known as Project Magnet and in government and community liaison. He has been the General Manager of OneSteel’s Whyalla Steelworks and held various technical and development roles for OneSteel. Mr. White’s experience is particularly relevant to Centrex Metal’s development plans for the Eyre Peninsula. Mr. White serves on the SA Resources and Energy Sector Infrastructure Committee, the SA  Resources Industry Development Board and the SA Chamber of Mines and Energy Board. Until recently he served on the SA Premiers Climate Change Council and he is also a past SA, IEAust professional engineer after the year (2007).

JOANNE WOOD

Joanne K. Wood is the Founder and Managing Partner of Capital Eight, an investment banking boutique specialising in corporate finance and headquartered in Shanghai.
Prior to establishing Capital Eight, Joanne worked in senior corporate finance positions with UBS, Jardine Fleming and GE Capital in Europe, the USA and China.
Joanne has 23 years of M&A experience including 19 years focussed on China M&A. At Jardine Fleming, she was a member of the first dedicated team of M&A professionals based in Asia and was internationally ranked as a leading Asian-emerging markets financial advisor.
Listing many Fortune 500, FTSE 100 and Sino 400 entities amongst her clients, Joanne continues to advise companies on China domestic and cross-border investment strategies, fund-raising plans and transaction negotiations.
Joanne represents the Foreign Financial Services Industry in China and is a Vice Chair of the EU Chamber of Commerce Financial Services Working Group that engages in peer dialogue with the Chinese Government; she also sits on both the British and Australian Chamber Financial Industry Committees.
Joanne is a regular speaker at international conferences and is often interviewed by international press and media regarding China’s financial services industry and China investment.  She has an MBA from London Business School, holds an under-graduate degree from the University of Adelaide, South Australia and reads, writes and speaks Mandarin.

JOE MASTRANGELO

Joe Mastrangelo has over twenty years experience in the South Australian government, which include ten years in economic development through the Department of Trade and Economic Development.  
He has significant international experience having managed international projects in China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and several European countries. 
Joe is currently a Director of Major Projects and Investment Attraction, within PIRSA which involves case managing high level, economic projects that benefit the State.  He has developed high-quality relations with significant senior government personnel, and is in an excellent position to facilitate negotiations, government approvals and agreements on behalf of local and international project proponents seeking to invest in the State. 
Joe is also the Director of the Resources and Energy Sector Infrastructure Council which comprises the chief executives of several government departments and managing directors of major mining and infrastructure companies.  The role of the Council is to provide independent advice to government on complex resource and energy infrastructure matters and facilitate collaboration between the private sector and government in the development of fit for purpose infrastructure.

LEESA CARSON

Leesa Carson is Group Leader of Mineral Resources, Advice and Promotions in the Onshore Energy and Minerals Division of Geoscience Australia. Leesa’s work contributes to evidence-based policy development and resource management decisions within the Australian Government. A key aspect of her work is to promote awareness of pre-competitive geoscience data and exploration opportunities in Australia. Prior to commencing with Geoscience Australia, Leesa worked with the Australia Government Department of Resources, Energy and Tourism on resources policy, with a focus on uranium. Leesa has a Master of Science in geology and a Graduate Diploma in natural resource economics.

OWEN HEGARTY

Owen Hegarty has some 40 years experience in the global mining industry.  He had 25 years with the Rio Tinto group where he was Managing Director of Rio Tinto Asia and Managing Director of the Group’s Australian copper and gold business.  He was the founder and CEO of the Oxiana Ltd Group which grew from a small exploration company to a multi-billion dollar Australia, Asia and Pacific focussed base and precious metals producer, developer and explorer.  Oxiana became Oz Minerals Ltd. 
For his achievements and leadership in the mining industry Owen was awarded the AusIMM Institute Medal in 2006 and the G.J. Stokes Memorial Award in 2008. 
Owen is presently Executive Vice Chairman of Hong Kong listed G-Resources Group Ltd, a gold mining company; and Executive Vice Chairman of CST Mining Group Ltd, also a Hong Kong listed mining company with a copper focus. He is a Non-Executive Director of Australian Fortescue Metals Group Ltd, a Director of the AusIMM, a member of the South Australian Minerals and Petroleum Expert Group, advising the Premier on mining in that State, and a Director of the WA based Mining Hall of Fame Foundation – a mining educational foundation. He is Founding Patron of CEEC (Coalition for Eco-Efficient Comminution) – a not-for-profit organisation aimed at increasing energy efficiencies in mining and minerals processing.
Owen is also Chairman of Tigers Realm Minerals Ltd, a private Melbourne based mining company looking to grow a diversified mining group.

PAUL GLASSON

Paul Glasson is currently Chief Representative in China and Director of the Australia China Business Council; Chairman of Satori Investments Greater China; Chief Representative in China to HRL Ltd; Chief Advisor on China to Atlas Iron; Director of Aokai Co. Ltd; Director of Li Jin Capital Ltd; and Chairman of Sigiriya Capital. From 2004-2008 Mr Glasson worked together with KPMG Australia building their advisory practice to Chinese companies investing in Australia.
Mr Glasson has been in China for more than thirteen years and is recognized in industry as one of the foremost experts on outbound investments by Chinese enterprises. He was acknowledged in 2009 and 2010 as one of the Young Leaders in China by the Boao Forum; and by the Australian newspaper in 2008 as one of "the Most Influential Australians in China".
Mr Glasson has been involved in many of the M + A transactions involving Chinese capital investment into Australia, having begun focusing on outbound transactions as early as 2001. More recent transactions include below.
Paul Glasson plays a pivotal advocacy role with the Australia China Business Council in promoting bi-lateral trade and investment ties including running the Australia China Economic & Trade Forum in 2010 and 2011 with Prime Minister of Australia Julia Gillard MP; Deputy Premier of China Li Keqiang; Vice President of China Xi Jinping and senior government and business leaders; as well as a range of other bi-lateral engagements with Australian and Chinese government and business.

PROFESSOR ALFRED HUANG AM

Alfred Huang was born in Chengdu, China and came to Australia to study Civil Engineering at the RMIT University in Melbourne. He has held senior positions in engineering and management in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide for many years.  
In 1992, Alfred was elected Councillor of the Adelaide City Council, and became the Deputy Lord Mayor three years later.  In May 2000, he was elected the first Chinese born Lord Mayor of an Australian Capital City.  
During his three years term as Lord Mayor, Alfred actively promoted Adelaide as an education city and supported closer cooperation and understanding between Adelaide and cities in the Asia Pacific Region.  During this period, he led several business and education delegations to China.   In December 2003, Alfred was awarded an Honorary Doctorate Degree by the University of South Australia and six months later he was named by the Australian Government a recipient of the AM award for his contribution to the community and education during his term as Lord Mayor. Alfred was appointed the Honorary Adviser to the Premier of South Australia on China in January 2005. He became the Special Envoy to China for the South Australian Government in August 2009. Alfred has made regular visits to China and lectured at the University of South Australia and a number of Chinese universities. He is currently working as a business consultant and adviser to companies involved in trade between Australia and China.

RICHARD WOLANKSI

Richard Wolanski (Executive Director) B.Com, ACA Mr Wolanski has been involved with Speewah since prior to the IPO in September 2007, which he managed. Mr Wolanski has extensive professional experience in both Australia and international finance industries.  He has provided corporate, strategic and financial advisory assistance to public companies in Australia, Singapore and the United Kingdom.
Mr Wolanski is a Chartered Accountant and has a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Western Australia.

RICK CAUSEBROOK

Rick Causebrook is a petroleum exploration geologist with over 30 years experience working in the UK, USA, and Australia on world-wide projects. He joined Geoscience Australia in 2004 and he is now project leader of the Greenhouse Gas Storage project. His work at Geoscience Australia has involved leading the studies into the geological storage of greenhouse gases in Australian basins and recently completed a national assessment of the storage potential of all Australian Basins which will guide the Australian Government in the acquisition of new data to assist companies interested in geological storage in making their investment decisions.  
He is also leader of the International Greenhouse Gas Storage Team under which the collaborative China-Australia Geological Storage project is co-managed.

STEVE OLSEN

Steven has worked as a Mine Geologist and Exploration Geologist over the past 15 years, predominantly in Western Australia, Canada, and Victoria on nickel and gold deposits.  From 2002 to 2007 Steven was Chief Geologist at Ballarat Goldfields NL (“BGF”), leading the geological team at BGF until the merger between BGF and Lihir. In 2007, soon after the merger with Lihir, Steven formed Rex Minerals along with fellow directors, Paul Chapman and Richard Laufmann. Steven’s qualifications include a Bachelor of Science degree with Honours (major in Geology) from the University of Melbourne, a Masters in Mineral Exploration from Queens University in Ontario, Canada and a Graduate Diploma of Applied Finance and Investment from the Securities Institute of Australia.

STUART GOWANS

Stuart Gowans is the General Manager of Business Development for the Ausenco Program Management business line. Stuarts key function involves securing business opportunities for the delivery of major projects and operating services in the global resources and energy sectors. He has extensive experience in developing and executing business growth strategies and has previously been involved in the fields of capital project delivery, engineering consultancy and operations management. Stuart has successfully developed and executed projects using various contracting methods both in the UK and Australia from both client and contractor perspectives.

VICTOR LI

In 1995 Mr.Li completed petroleum engineering study at Xi'an shiyou University. At present He is proceeding master study of oil & gas storage and transportation engineering at China University of Petroleum.
After his graduation Victor joined China National Offshore Oil Corporation(CNOOC). He once worked in Yacheng 13-1 gas field of CNOOC Nanhai West Corporation, QHD32-6 oil field, JZ9-3 oil and gas fields, SZ36-1 oil field, QHD32-6/BZ25-1 Operating Company, Liaodong Production Department Of CNOOC Ltd.Tianjin, Boxi Production Department of CNOOC Ltd.Tianjin etc.
He was once appointed as as an Operator, Production Supervisor, Superintendent, Operation Manager, Production Manager, QHSE manager, Deputy General Manager and many other positions. He has also took charge of CNOOC's largest oil and gas field and organized a number of  test running and operation in oil and gas fields. He has abundant cooperation experiences with international oil companies including ARCO、BP、Chevron Texaco and so on.
At present Victor is fully responsible for the new energy business development, resources harvest, project development and providing overall direction and management for CNOOC New Energy International (Australia) Co.Ltd.

WEI MO

Wayne Mo joined ANZ natural Resources team as a Director in Oct 2008. He has national responsibility on the banks relationship with Chinese company investing in Natural Resources industry in Australia.  He has significant recent experience on working with Chinese banks on financing Natural Resources projects in Australia.   
Wayne was General Manager of ANZ Beijing Branch from 2005 to September 2008. Wayne has 16 years experience in banking industry in China, Australia, Singapore and other Asian countries.  Since joining ANZ in 2001, Wayne had held various senior positions in ANZ, including General Manager Beijing, Head of Manufacturing Industry Asia, Deputy General Manager Shanghai, Head of Corporate Banking China etc, until he assumed his current role. Before joining ANZ, Wayne had worked in Bank of Tokyo Mitsubishi for 6 years.
Wayne holds a MBA from Webster University, USA and Bachelor of Economics from Shanghai University of Finance and Economics. He sat on the board of Australia China Chamber of Commerce, Beijing from Oct 2006 to Sep 2008.
Wayne was guest speaker for 2010 Sustainable Risk Rationalisation Conference Melbourne; 2007 Europe Asia Forum, Qingdao; State Council Development and Research Centre 2008 Finance Forum, Beijing; and various events organised by Australia China Business Council, China Chamber of Commerce Australia, China International Mining Working Group, Asian Capital Forum and China Finance Net etc.  He was also guest speakers to Melbourne University Alumni, Macquarie university MBA students and NSW University MBA students.
